A couple of years ago I discovered an album called Gold Fever by Little Hurricane. The record was dirty, bluesy and at times slightly distorted, but the songs were also melodic with a lyrical honesty that was refreshing.
As a duo featuring drums and guitar playing their own brand of dirty blues Little Hurricane were always likely to be compared to bands like the Black Keys, and with a male guitarist (Anthony “Tone” Catalano) and female drummer (Celeste “CC” Spina) even more so the White Stripes. But those unwarranted comparisons are superficial. Little Hurricane’s brand of stripped back, amped up sound owes as much to country blues, southern swamp or 60’s psychedelic pop as anything else.
Little Hurricane’s debut Homewrecker garnered enough interest to ensure plenty of club work, but the San Diego duo’s formidable live show ensured they rapidly built a following moving from small venues to major tour supports like the John Butler Trio and festivals like Lollapalooza and South By Southwest.
Their second album Gold Fever cemented their reputation and by the time of its release in 2014 Little Hurricane had a host of their songs featuring in TV shows and movies. With a strong emotive palette within their music it was an inevitable outcome.
The band’s new album Same Sun Same Moon sees the band moving from their independent status to a deal with Mascot Records, the blues label that’s also home to artists like Robert Cray, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Johnny Lang and Beth Hart. It’s a perfect fit for the duo who also recently cemented their relationship by getting married.
The cover for the new disc features Tone and CC in their underwear, a surprising move for a band that have never previously featured their images on their album artwork. It’s a point I was curious to pursue and their answer reveals much more than their bare essentials. But when you’re partners in life and in music how much of your personal life can you hold back from public scrutiny? Let’s find out.
