Lime Cordiale – Waking Up Easy
Basking in the glorious spring sunshine soaking up some new tunes today and Lime Cordiale fills my screen with a sound that has a distinct whiff of summer. It’s not the first time these boys from Sydney’s northern beaches have caught my attention. A couple of years ago I was sent a copy of their single Feel Alright and was mightily impressed, so much so that I added the track to the playlist of the radio station I was programming at the time.
Aside from the obvious humour of the clip Feel Alright had a classic pop music sensibility that was refreshingly not aimed at teenagers with a zero attention span – there was some meat on these bones that suggested these guys might be more than just a 3 minute wonder even though mainstream radio had ignored the song.
Lime Cordiale’s Oli Leimbach explained the band’s approach to making music:
“We don’t spend lots of time thinking about whether someone thinks our song is great. We just do what we do and people seem to react positively. We like to communicate with our fans directly. We put all our effort into writing good tunes and putting on great live shows.”
For Lime Cordiale it’s been a DIY approach to creating and promoting their music from the outset, but with some promotional savvy in the digital sphere including their Lime TV You Tube channel they’ve grown their fan base quickly. Their last single Hanging Upside Down has now chalked up in excess of 1 million Spotify plays.
While the band have largely operated independently with their music and doing much of the work on their clips they did have some help with the video of their new song Waking Up Easy:
“We ran into a lot of luck creating this video. It was directed by our long-term mate, Matthew Jenkin. Matt had just finished working with Matilda Brown on her upcoming series. We convinced Matilda’s entire crew to come shoot our video at their wrap party, and started the next week. We had a pro DOP (Director Of Photography), the best underwater cameraman and a drone operator all helping out because they wanted to support us. Just a bunch of legends.”
You don’t get that kind of help without people respecting what you do. It isn’t hard to see why others are taking notice of Lime Cordiale and their music.
