With the remarkable success of Flowers’ debut album Iva Davies found himself in the precarious position of trying to match it with “the difficult second album”. After changing the name of the band to Icehouse his response was the stunning Primitive Man, a record that contained what would become his signature song Great Southern Land.
In the final part of this podcast Iva talks about the origins of that song and the challenges Icehouse faced with the albums that followed until the phenomenal global breakthrough of Man Of Colours and the hit singles from it Crazy and Electric Blue – a song that Iva went to great lengths to avoid writing with John Oates.
Iva also shares some fan mail from Lou Reed as he reflects on the band’s approaching 40th anniversary – a milestone that will be celebrated next year with the most extensive Australian tour by the band for decades.

Brilliant! An interview that will be tough to be beat and the best one I’ve ever heard.
The song ‘Heaven’ and The Berlin Tapes sentimentally marked my reintroduction to Icehouse and Iva Davies after only remembering them vaguely as a teen in the 80’s with MTV. My personal affinity for that particular collection of covers holds a certain ‘divine providence’ for me as an artist.
I was excited to hear this second half and it didn’t disappoint.
Thank you and congratulations for such a fine interview!

Hey Tina, the Sound Distractions team of me, myself and I aim to please! All credit to Iva for being so candid, without it you don’t get a good interview. Hope you enjoy the other Sound Distractions podcast interviews.
Cheers, T.
